Abstract
The ability to remember proper names, especially people's names, is of great relevance in social interactions. However, in people with Alzheimer's Disease Dementia (ADD) this ability is markedly impaired. Difficulty in retrieving proper names is defined as anomia for proper names. This difficulty may result from a disturbance at the pre-semantic, semantic or post-semantic level. Intervention in anomic disorders must be tailored to the level of processing that is altered within the word retrieval process, so determining the functional origin of anomia for proper names is a necessary condition for developing effective treatments for people with ADD. However, the nature of proper names anomia in ADD is not fully elucidated. Although there is much evidence in favor of this anomia being caused by impairment at the semantic level, there is also evidence that deficits at the post-semantic level may contribute substantially to proper names anomia in ADD. Furthermore, the contribution of presemantic deficits to this anomia has not been completely ruled out...
