Abstract
A través de la metáfora del calzado el novelista argentino Abel Posse rescata la peculiar figura del conquistador Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, quien, en sus Naufragios, hace hincapié en su estado de descalcez como símbolo de su predisposición al intercambio cultural. La novela El largo atardecer del caminante retoma la imagen del calzado presentando un amplio muestrario de zapatos como botas, mocasines, sandalias, coturnos, ojotas o zancos que un sexagenario conquistador Cabeza de Vaca va calzando a lo largo de su vida a medida que reescribe sus memorias del Nuevo Mundo en la Sevilla del XVI, donde la coexistencia de cristianos viejos, moros y judíos conversos corre paralela a la multiculturalidad del continente americano con los pueblos indígenas y los europeos, simbolizándose así su habilidad de entendimiento cultural al ser capaz de “ponerse en los zapatos del otro”.
Through the metaphor of footwear, Argentinian novelist Abel Posse rescues the peculiar figure of the conqueror Alvar Núñez Cabeza de Vaca, who, in his Naufragios, emphasizes his state of being barefoot as a symbol of his predisposition towards cultural interchange. The novel El largo atardecer del caminante retakes the image of the footwear by displaying a wide sampler of footwear such as shoes, boots, moccasins, sandals, cothurns, flip-flops and stilts that a sixty-year old conqueror Cabeza de Vaca puts on throughout his life while he rewrites his memories of the New World in Spain during the sixteenth century where the coexistence of old Christians, Moors and converted Jews runs parallel to the multiculturality of the American continent with the indigenous peoples and the Europenas, symbolizing in this way his ability towards cultural understanding given that he is able “to put himself in someone else’s shoes.”
