Una colección de esquelas impresas del siglo XVIII: la correspondencia del I Duque de San Carlos

Abstract

La Biblioteca Histórica de la UCM conserva una colección epistolar que reúne en un volumen facticio casi quinientas esquelas impresas con notificaciones, invitaciones y solicitudes remitidas al I Duque de San Carlos (1722-1797). El objeto de este artículo es presentar esta colección de impresos efímeros, su destinatario y remitentes, describir sus características físicas y formales así como apuntar una tipología y clasificación temática y abordar la problemática que presenta su datación cronológica. Esta colección de esquelas ofrece una valiosa información acerca del empleo de este particular género epistolar en la España del último cuarto del siglo XVIII así como de algunas costumbres y convenciones sociales de la nobleza madrileña de la época en lo que a rituales de invitación y notificación se refiere.[ABSTRACT]The Historical Library of the UCM contains a collection of correspondence that gathers in a factitious volume nearly five hundred printed notifications, invitations and requests sent to the Duke of San Carlos (1722-1797). The purpose of this paper is to present this collection of printed ephemera, its recipient and senders, describing their physical and formal characteristics as well as pointing out a typology and thematic classification and address the issues presented by their chronological dating. This collection of printed correspondence provides valuable information on the use of this particular epistolary genre in Spain in the last quarter of the eighteenth century as well as on some of the social customs and conventions of the Madrid nobility as far as the rituals of invitation and notification are concerned.
