Abstract
There was a strong need to carry research on collections of sound recordings in Spain, and specially on how collections regarded as part of the Spanish cultural heritage should be managed. Such collections are sets of relatively aged documents bearing outstanding value, and are difficult or impossible to replace; recordings whose physical media may consist of punctured paper rolls, cylinders made of wax or other materials, aluminium or lacquer discs, magnetic tapes in open or closed reels, etc. All of these media are called “analog”, as opposed to newer, ‘digital’ formats; and, in contrast to recently formed sound collections consisting of commercial recordings, they pose particular demands as regards preservation, analysis, access, and dissemination. They also require their contents to be transferred, through the process called digitization, although neither the ‘new’documents that are the outcome of that process, nor the so-called ‘digitally-born’ ones, provide everlasting solutions; in fact, they all have to face important problems for a proper safeguarding...
