Abstract
OBJECTIVES: The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to assess the prevalence of xerostomia and hyposalivation together with the associated risk factors in a group of hypertensive patients. It is also planned to study whether the severity of xerostomia influences the oral health-related quality of life of these patients. The specific objectives are: (1) To perform a systematic review to assess whether the prevalence of xerostomia and hyposalivation and salivary flow rate are different in patients taking antihypertensive drugs than in a control group. We also aimed to identify the antihypertensive drugs associated with these salivary problems (study 1) ; (2) To analyze the prevalence of xerostomia and hyposalivation and the epidemiological risk factors, diseases and drugs associated with these salivary disorders in a group of hypertensive patients (study 2) ; (3) To assess whether the severity of xerostomia in hypertensive patients has an impact on oral health-related quality of life to study which factors influence the scores of xerostomia severity and oral health-related quality of life (study 3).
