Abstract
The Spanish university system consists of both public and private universities. Within this context, libraries play a prominent role in providing support services for education and research. The aim of this article is to analyze the differences between public and private traditional (face to face) university libraries in Spain in 38 variables related to expenditure, staff, training, space, technological equipment, use, research support and collection with attention to institutional repositories and open access. The results of basic descriptive statistics and analyze whether there are statistically significant differences by type of library are compared. The results are higher for private university libraries in a range from 23% of the variables according to the median and 36% to the mean. Furthermore, there are no statistically significant differences in 42% of the variables. The possible reasons for a trend towards the confluence of the private university library model with that of public universities are discussed, taking into account the Organic Law of the Spanish University System of 2023, especially with regard to the increase in the required percentage of accredited personnel with doctoral degrees at private universities compared to what was required in the Organic Law of Universities of 2001.
