Abstract
La Interleucina (IL)-6 es una citocina pleiotrópica con propiedades pro- y anti-inflamatorias, inductora de la respuesta de fase aguda, y moduladora de genes de diferenciación, supervivencia, apoptosis y proliferación celular. Aunque su importancia para la regeneración hepática tras una hepatectomía parcial (HP) está aceptada, diversos datos contradictorios han generado controversia sobre su papel. Adicionalmente, estudios recientes cuestionan el papel de las células de Kupffer (macrófagos residentes en el hígado) como responsables de la producción de IL-6 tras una HP, sugiriendo que otras células, incluyendo los hepatocitos, podrían contribuir a la misma. Interleukin (IL)-6 is a pleiotropic cytokine with pro- and anti-inflammatory properties, inducer of the acute phase response, and modulator of genes related to differentiation, survival, apoptosis, and cellular proliferation. Even though its importance for liver regeneration after a partial hepatectomy (PH) is well accepted, diverse contradictory data have generated controversy regarding its real role. In addition, recent studies have questioned the role of Kupffer cells (liver tissue macrophages) as main players responsible for the production of IL-6 after a PH, suggesting that other cells, including hepatocytes, may also contribute. HHYYPPOOTTHHEESSIISS The general hypothesis of the present study was that Kupffer cells are the main cellular source of IL-6 after a PH in mice.
