La ‘bella muerta’ en el fin de siglo

Abstract

La ‘bella muerta’ es una figura recurrente del arte finisecular, representando una belleza física degenerada que da paso a un estado trascendente. Es, por tanto, símbolo de un tipo de belleza grotesca, sublimada en la fealdad. Desde el romanticismo, la figura irá cobrando mayor importancia y valor simbólico, puesto que refleja fascinación, misterio e, incluso, destrucción, sobre todo desde las variantes de la misma que generan, entre otras influencias, el culto a la muerte o el espiritismo. Analizando distintos ejemplos españoles y foráneos, este estudio se centra en la narrativa breve de diversos escritores y escritoras, mostrando un amplio abanico de tendencias propio de la complejidad y riqueza del arte finisecular, complementándolo con la pintura, debido a la importancia que en dicha época tuvo la interrelación de las distintas artes.

The ‘Beautiful Death Woman’ is a recurrent figure in Fin-de-siècle art, representing a degenerate physical beauty which leads to a transcendental state. It is, therefore, the symbol of a type of grotesque beauty that is sublimated into ugliness. Since Romanticism, this figure has been steadily gaining greater importance and symbolic significance, since it reflects fascination, mystery and even destruction, especially in variants of the same which spawn, among other influences, the cult of death or of spiritualism. By analysing different examples from Spanish and foreign sources, this study focuses on the short stories of various authors, showing a wide range of trends found in the complexity and richness of this fin-de-siècle genre, complementing these with the paintings of the era, given the importance that was placed on the interrelation between the two art-forms in this period.
