Abstract
The article discusses the origin and evolution of the cleavages within recent transformations of the Chilean party system. Without denying the impact of the 2017 reform of the electoral system, the article argues about the need of reviewing our assumptions about cleavages that have historically organized the political contest in Chile. This work goes over the evolution of class and religious cleavages, and the subsequent authoritarian/democratic division that organized partisan dynamics for two decades. Finally, it analyzes how valid this cleavage structure continues to be after student mobilizations of 2011 and the 2017 elections. We argue about the limited capacity of the classical cleavage approach to summarize the current partisan dynamics and the structure of political competition in Chile. At the same time, it is offered a renewed version of the concept in order to understand the structure of the party system in present-day Chile.
