Abstract
The doctoral dissertation, “Dreams According to Uncle Walt: A Psychosocial and Linguistic Study of the Dreams Sung about in the Disney Animated Feature-Length “Classics”, from the Gender Perspective,” intends to present a new approach to a media product that is already receiving a great deal of attention on a global scale. Just in the last decade, countless research has been carried out about gender in the world of Disney. In this case, the objective is to delve deeper into the messages transmitted about the characters’ dreams, and the ways in which they express them.As a starting point, we posed the question of how said messages in these films might influence the gender identity of their young audience, and, in order to answer this question, the need arose to create a theoretical framework encompassing the study of gender identity development, the historical gender framework of the Spanish audience, and the different approaches and methods for studying the media and this particular media product. We have adopted a psychosocial approach, insisting on the variable nature of gender identity throughout life, while bearing in mind the social, political and economic changes occurring in Spain since the Spanish Civil War, as well as the history of this media giant; and we have chosen content analysis (with a discourse analysis point of view) as a research guide. Of course, we have considered the vast corpus of relevant research carried out by other researchers around the world. Assimilating this information has enabled us to design a method to use, for the purpose of discerning both the “what” and the “how” of the wish messages transmitted by Disney in the songs of its “Classics”...
