Abstract
ABSTRACT: Christian centos represent a particular case in ancient literature, since the Latin productions preceded the Greek ones. After considering briefl y the determining factors which led to the rise of that genre in late Antiquity, this paper focuses on the two more signifi cant representatives of the Christian centos in Latin and in Greek, i.e. Proba and Eudocia. Th e analysis of specifi c passages in both works (together with other extrinsic factors) leads us to consider that Eudocia probably knew Proba’s work and in fact the former imitated the latter in certain characteristics regarding general composition. On the other hand, there are noticeable diff erences between them as well, which, however, may be due to the real diff erencies between Virgil and Homer, the poets that Proba and Eudocia used, respectively, to sew their centos.
