Abstract
Given the importance of the research activity of the Higher Education Sector, this study analyzes the scientific production of universities in Brazil and Spain by subject area in the period between 2003 and 2012. The main objective is to know and compare the contribution of universities in each of these countries and identify their thematic specialization profiles. As a source of information we use the Web of Science (WoS) databases. Using bibliometric techniques and statistics, scientific activity and thematic specialization indicators were obtained. The results show that in Spain 68% of the publications corresponding to the universities, while in Brazil these values reach 88%. It is observed that medicine and their branches are the main areas of production in Spain and in Brazil is evidenced further specialization in Chemistry and Materials Science. Analyzing the university system, it was observed that the Brazilian thematic profile is very similar to the country while in Spain universities demonstrate different patterns for the total production. Thus, Spain highlights the specialization in experimental Psychology, Mathematics applied and Linguistics while in Brazil the biggest specialization is in Material Sciences, Biomaterials; Chemistry Organic; Chemistry, Medicinal and Microscopy. These results give valuable information to propose strategies for the evaluation of universities and facilitate the comparison between institutions in different geographical areas.
