Abstract
Some Brazilian public libraries, driven by the success of Colombian public library model, are reshaping for the convergence of information framework of actions, social, cultural and educational. The courses of Library and Information Sciences in the country still do not offer courses to meet the demand arising from the Brazilian public library. Professionals working in these environments as well as having skills for the organization and retrieval of information , must have a vocation and creativity to promote a series of actions and activities that contribute to the development of citizens. This work aims to analyze the social profile of the librarian working in public libraries. For this, a case study of a network of public libraries was held in a city of São Paulo (Brazil). Besides systematic observation techniques, questionnaires were administered to eight professionals working in the library network in order to verify their perceptions of the social nature of their activities. Among the results, it was found that it is still a widespread perception that allowing community access to the library collection and the social role of vocational took place. Librarians have not tried to be increasingly necessary to develop social actions in the vicinity of the public library. The reflections made after the development of research allowed to raise library features that could make a social profile of public libraries in action. It is expected that the discussions raised can compose a list of the largest studies on new directions of Brazilian public libraries and training of librarians to work on these educational, social and cultural environments.
