Abstract
The aim of this book chapter is to address the role played by the revenues of the ecclesiastical benefices (dignities, canonries and simple benefices) in the economic support of the ecclesiastical ministers of the Portuguese Holy Office. Firstly, an overview of the sources of income of the Portuguese Inquisition from its establishment in 1536 until its extinction in 1821 is presented. Secondly, the question of the ecclesiastical benefices held by the ministers of the Holy Office is analysed, and these ecclesiastical revenues are compared with those received from the Tribunal of the Faith. Thirdly, it studies the emergence of an elite within the Portuguese Church, formed by the deputies of the Holy Office who, without being promoted to the office of inquisitors, enjoyed the privileges of the Tribunal and ecclesiastical benefices (especially doctoral canonries) without fulfilling the duty of residence.
