Abstract
This doctoral thesis examines and evaluates in detail the work of director José Luis Garci in his first stage as a filmmaker during the period between Asignatura pendiente (1977) and Asignatura aprobada (1987). For a precise breakdown, an internal division is proposed that will group the works with a series of unifying characteristics. Under the title The Triptych of the Transition, the films Asignatura pendiente (1977), Solos en la madrugada (1978), and Las verdes praderas (1979) of special historical relevance are included. In From Films to Movies, the films El crack (1981), Volver a empezar (1982), and El crack dos (1983) are combined, where two classic Hollywood genres, noir and melodrama, are reinterpreted. The last period In first person, it coordinates the two films with the greatest autofictional load in Garci's filmography, Sesión continua (1984) and Asignatura aprobada (1987). A contextualization and historical consideration of the relevance of each work in relation to its temporal context is also addressed. In addition to this historiographical component, the study is based on the cinematic textual analysis of the initial and final sequences of each film, as well as the breakdown and systematization of the narrative strategies...
