Abstract
The aim of this study is to examine the material dimension of Max Scheler's ethics of value and -- insofar as this is one of the keys to his critique of Immanuel Kant's moral formalism -- to assess the extent to which this critique is legitimate. Accordingly, we must first examine both the ultimate meaning of formalism, and the possibility of a material aspect implicit in Kant's ethics. Even in the face of its material claims, it will be also necessary to elucidate the possibility of an unwanted kind of formalism in the foundation of Scheler's ethics.
