Abstract
This article deals with the difficulties of social integration of Chinese students, particularly those studying at university in Madrid. In the Community of Madrid, one of the measures to integrate foreign students into the educational system is the Welcome Schools Program. The international mobility of students constitutes a transformation of the higher education system in the context of globalization. However, problems arise when cultural differences affect intercultural exchange and learning. The objective of this study is to determine whether Chinese students coming to study in Madrid have difficulties of social integration. To analyze and propose integration alternatives or adaptation strategies to overcome such integration difficulties, if any, and to integrate Chinese students more fully into Madrid and Spanish society. To study the impact of different factors on the social integration of Chinese students, I used a qualitative approach and conducted an anonymous survey with 231 Chinese students with Spanish student visas. Six areas were assessed and summarized: language difficulties, academic difficulties, residence difficulties, intercultural difficulties, difficulties in social relationships, and economic difficulties during their stay in Madrid. The survey also explores the relationship between age, gender, highest level of education, field of knowledge and time spent in Spain.
