Abstract

Desde 1984 hasta la actualidad se han venido desarrollando excavaciones arqueológicas continuadas en el yacimiento oretano y medieval de Calatrava la Vieja (Ciudad Real), un cerro amesetado situado junto al Guadiana, de unas 6 ha de extensión y desde el que se tiene un buen control visual de los terrenos circundantes así como del propio río. Una de las aportaciones más importantes de estas ha sido la constatación de que con anterioridad a la ocupación islámica ya fue un destacado oppidum oretano. [ABSTRACT] Since 1984, the archaeological excavations had been systematic in the oretani and islamic site of Calatrava la Vieja (Ciudad Real, Spain), a promontory situated at left si de of Guadiana river, with a size of six hectares and an ample view of the surrounding plain. One of the most important contribution of the excavations is the presence of an oretani oppidum under the medieval city. However, only a little things we know of it: the wall of heavy stone blocks around part of the settlement and a important volumen of iberia n pottery. The houses and other buildings had been destroyed by the islamic urbanismo By the other hand, t he archaeological evidence shows that it was occupied also in the Bronze Age and in the First Iron Age, in both cases human groups of a few number of persons. The purpose of this paper is to make a comprehensive analysis of the 1" millenruum in this settlement.
