Abstract
Ante el aumento de la longevidad y el cambio en la estructura demográfica, el estudio de la vejez ha cobrado un renovado interés. Al respecto, uno de las aspectos más controvertidos es el referente al cuidado de la vejez y dónde debiera producirse. Esta cuestión resulta de especial interés en el contexto español, caracterizado por un sistema de bienestar que asume que esta dimensión corresponde a la familia.Sin embargo, como numerosas investigaciones han puesto de relieve, existe preferencia entre las personas mayores a experimentar la vejez de manera independiente en la propia vivienda, dando forma a lo que se ha denominado ageingin place. Traducido como envejecimiento en el lugar, comprende la continuidad de la persona mayor en la sociedad, y más concretamente, en el entorno social conocido y elegido por ellos. Por otra parte, esta preferencia se plantea también como una orientación política orientada al recorte de gastos frente a otras opciones o alternativas residenciales.No obstante, y a pesar de su importancia, las condiciones de las viviendas en las que se realiza el envejecimiento son poco conocidas, de modo que se asume la inexistencia de problemas residenciales en el colectivo de los mayores de 65 años...
Faced with the increase in longevity and the change in the demographic structure, thestudy of old age became of renewed interest. In this regard, one of the mostcontroversial aspects is the one relating to the care of old age and where it should takeplace. This issue is particularly interesting in the Spanish context, characterized by awelfare system that assumes that this dimension corresponds to the family.However, as many researches have shown, there is a preference among older adults toexperience old age independently in their own home, giving shape to what has beencalled “ageing in place”. This concept comprises the continuity of the elderly in society,and more specifically, in the social environment known and chosen by them. On theother hand, this preference is also considered as a political orientation aimed atcutting expenses compared to other options or residential alternatives.Nonetheless, and despite of their importance, the housing conditions occupied byaging population are little known, therefore it is assumed that there are no housingproblems among the elderly...
