Abstract
Current advances in the field of ICT have allowed an important boost in the development of the Augmentative and Alternative Communication Systems (SAACs), so necessary for people with disabilities to communicate with their environment. These systems allow attracting the attention of this group by presenting images and sounds in a stimulating way. The adoption of these SAACs by people with difficulties in communication enhances the development of the language without assuming any impediment to the development of speech, but on the contrary. For people with ASD (Autism Spectrum Disorder), it is essential to have alternative ways of receiving information from their context through visual, auditory or mixed reinforcements. This paper presents PICTAR, an application aimed at people with ASD, which facilitates the work with pictograms and the development of materials from them in the field of special education. It is designed as a web application, making it accessible from anywhere and trying to reach as many users as possible. It is constituted by an editing tool that allows to create materials based on pictograms in a comfortable and simple way, and also includes a text translation service to pictograms. The development of this project has been carried out in close collaboration with associations and special education centers, in order to solve the problems they encounter when working with pictograms in the most adapted way to their needs that is possible. These entities have participated from the requirements gathering to the final evaluations with professionals and users with ASD.
