Abstract
World War II represented a rupture within Italian society of antiquated conceptions of family, and established the foundation for the emancipation of women. The arrival of democracy brought with it a stark contrast between the aspirations of many women who desired parity and a society anchored in the past that wanted to reestablish traditional values related to family and the role of women. This situation is reflected in cinema newsreels of postwar Italy, in which a series of feminine stereotypes such as that of the wife and the mother are shown, in accordance with patriarchal values of Italian society from that time.
