Abstract
Abstract The study of the determinants of the presence of women on boards of directors has been a relevant topic in the study of diversity in corporate governance. This work aims to contribute to the lack of studies focused on complementary and substitute factors that affect the diversity of the board of directors. Using a configurational approach, we intend to understand if there are factors whose combination causes diversity levels in the boards above the ‘market normal’, which is usually influenced by existing regulation. We use a qualitative comparative methodology to study possible combinations of causal relationships that lead to a significant presence of women in the board of listed companies. We find different patterns by combination of elements such as the size of the company, the size of the board of directors, the degree of independence of the board, the ownership structure, or the public exposure, which can be useful both to understand the phenomenon and to the design of diversity programs oriented to the composition of the councils
