The audiovisual translation of crime series : a genre approach

Abstract

This doctoral thesis called ‘The audiovisual translation of crime series: a genre approach’ has the objective of conducting an in-depth study of the audiovisual translation of crime fiction, with the objective of gaining a greater understanding of it, due to the lack of research that has been devoted to this matter. To achieve this, an examination is carried out on the translation of this genre, with a comparative analysis between crime and comedy genres.The selected corpus for this thesis is made of two American TV series: Wicked City, a crime drama, and Crowded, a comedy. The analysis comprises both quantitative and qualitative approaches, thus providing a deeper exploration of the subject matter. The first part of the analysis includes a study of the typical characteristics of the crime genre, as well as the linguistic and technical constraints that shape its audiovisual translation. In addition, the translation techniques employed are also examined, along with an investigation into the presence of humorous elements within the series of this genre...Esta tesis doctoral llamada ‘La traducción audiovisual de las series de crimen: un enfoque de género’ tiene como objetivo llevar a cabo un estudio en profundidad de la traducción audiovisual de crimen, con el objetivo de obtener un mayor entendimiento de esta misma, debido a la más bien poca investigación que se ha dedicado a ella. Para alcanzar esto, se realiza un examen de la traducción de este género, con un análisis comparativo entre los géneros de crimen y comedia. El corpus elegido para esta tesis consiste en dos series de televisión estadounidenses: Wicked City, un drama de crimen, y Crowded, una comedia. El análisis contiene enfoques tanto cuantitativos como cualitativos, proporcionando así una exploración más profunda del tema.
