El fenómeno de la peregrinación cristiana penitencial. El Purgatorio de San Patricio

Abstract

El presente trabajo pretende realizar un estudio interdisciplinar de la práctica ritual de la peregrinación, uno de los fenómenos más comunes entre las grandes tradiciones religiosas. A modo de introducción se intentará abarcar todo su amplio espectro mediante un análisis antropológico del fenómeno en cuestión donde se tratarán sus componentes básicos: viaje, santuario y peregrino. Seguidamente, nos centraremos en un estudio más concreto, focalizando la peregrinación en su vertiente cristiana medieval a través de un análisis de matiz más histórico. Se observará la expansión de esta práctica espiritual por el viejo continente, la cual irá cogiendo más fuerza al popularizarse entre los fieles como instrumento ritual perfecto. Mediante esta práctica errante los más devotos podían vivir su espiritualidad de forma más "tangible" y cercana al igual que expurgar de forma eficaz todos sus pecados. Esta motivación de origen sagrado comenzará a mezclarse con la curiosita del momento por conocer lugares lejanos. Tales asuntos se verán plasmados en la peregrinación a Lough Derg o Purgatorio de San Patricio. Esta peregrinación irlandesa de origen medieval la cual ha continuado casi ininterrumpidamente hasta nuestros tiempos ayudó durante el Medievo a terminar de establecer el cristianismo en aquellas lejanas tierras y fue un lugar decisivo para el impulso del naciente dogma del purgatorio.

The aim of this work is to carry out an interdisciplinary study of the ritualistic practice of pilgrimage, one of the most common phenomenon within the great religious traditions. By way of introduction we will attempt to cover the whole spectrum by means of an anthropological analysis of the phenomenon in question, dealing with the basic components – the journey, the shrine and the pilgrim. After that we will concentrate on a more concrete study, focusing on the medieval Christian aspect of the pilgrimage by means of an analysis with a more historic slant. We will observe the spread of this spiritual practice throughout the old continent, seeing it gain strength as it becomes increasingly more popular among the faithful as a perfect ritualistic instrument. Through this errant practice the devout could live their spirituality in a more "tangible" and intimate way just as they could purge all their sins in a more effective fashion. This motivation, sacred in origin, begins to mingle with the curiosita of the moment to discover faraway places. Such matters were embodied in the pilgrimage to Lough Derg or Saint Patrick´s Purgatory. This Irish pilgrimage, medieval in origin, which has carried on almost con nuously until the present day during the Middle Ages helped to finally establish Christianity in those distant lands and was decisive as an impetus for the nascent dogma of purgatory.
