La maternidad contemporánea entre la catástrofe y el sacrificio. Un análisis de la película "Lo imposible"

Abstract

Este texto analiza, con las herramientas de los Cultural Studies y la historiografía del cine, la figura de la madre como un elemento clave en la película de Lo imposible (2012) dirigida por Juan Antonio Bayona. Su enorme éxito de público (cuarenta y dos millones de euros de recaudación) se explica a través del trasfondo de la crisis económica y social que padecemos, que favorece la aparición de expresiones culturales conservadoras.

This text analyses the image of motherhood presented in the Spanish film The Impossible (2012) based on two different contextual elements: the disaster film and the stereotype of the Mater dolorosa (Mother of Sorrows). The argument put forward is that the figure of the sacrificial mother that appears in the film responds to a specific moment of financial and social crisis in which traditional figures of the sacrificing and care-giving mother provide assurance in a world of widespread uncertainty.
