Abstract
This investigation, entitled “Puppetry as an Educational Tool for Primary School,” considers that puppets represent an invaluable educational resource and has the pretense of promoting its use in school. The main objective of this doctoral thesis is to investigate the potential that this artistic language can bring to the educational field, particularly in the primary school classroom. Considering its great symbolic capacity and metaphoric quality in relation to human beings, we consider that the puppet represents a powerful and enriching tool in school. In this sense, this research aims to explore and identify how puppetry, applied in the educational context, can contribute to stimulating and reinforcing not only the sensorial, intellectual, and communicative development of the students, but also favor the teaching-learning process itself through its function as a mediating object. From a bibliographic review about puppet theater over the last decades, the theoretical reflections and practical experiences of many authors contemplate it as a valuable instrument for education at all levels. However, they detect, in general, a considerable lack of knowledge and training of teachers about its use as a resource and tool in the school environment. Faced with this evidence, the intention of this doctoral thesis is to recover the use of puppets in school as amere expressive technique, implement a process of research and exploration of this powerful artistic language, apply it, and analyze results in the educational and social sphere. With the paradigm of research-based arts as a point of departure, qualitative methodology–including phenomenological, constructivist, auto-ethnographic, a/r/t/ographic approaches– was employed to conduct this research...
