Cuando el progreso se torna vigilancia: Ciudades web-distópicas: «El Vigilante» de Aissa Santiso

Abstract

En la creación artística contemporánea se observa una saludable coexistencia de técnicas y lenguajes que se remonta hasta el último tercio del siglo pasado. En este contexto, la imagen digital ha ido ganando un protagonismo indiscutible con la invasión de Internet, la telefonía móvil o la web 2.0, conocida, también, como web social o participativa. En este panorama visual, reflejo a su vez de «sociedad red, son muchos los y las artistas que se sienten seducidos por el modo en que se crean, reproducen y expanden los registros visuales, así como su autonomía. De igual manera, la imagen fotográfica se torna herramienta de investigación artística para explorar el carácter de lo íntimo, personal y expresivo, de la arquitectura y los lugares habitados; para registrar lo social y la representación de lo abstracto o, también, para hacer visibles las huellas del Antropoceno. Se describe así el crisol de intereses, inquietudes o preocupaciones manifestadas por los/las protagonistas, sobre todo emergentes, de la creación artística contemporánea. En dicho contexto, la presente investigación se adentra en el estudio de la serie fotográfica titulada «El Vigilante» (2014-2019), realizada por la artista visual y multimedia Aissa Santiso (La Habana 1992-), y su aportación a la creación artística contemporánea en el marco de la era digital y el impacto social de la Web 2.0. Un proyecto que tiene como escenario las ciudades del siglo XXI, como principal protagonista, la amenaza del estado vigilante en la vida cotidiana mediante la tecnología de las cámaras CCTV, entre otras, y como telón de fondo la condición líquida de la sociedad contemporánea teorizada por Zygmunt Bauman.

In contemporary artistic creation there is a healthy coexistence of techniques and languages that dates back to the last third of the last century. In this context, the digital image has been gaining unquestionable prominence with the invasion of the Internet, mobile telephony or web 2.0, also known as social or participatory web. In this visual panorama, which in turn reflects the "network society", many artists are seduced by the way in which visual registers are created, reproduced and expanded, as well as their autonomy. In the same way, the photographic image becomes a tool for artistic research to explore the intimate, personal and expressive character of architecture and inhabited places; to record the social and the representation of the abstract or, also, to make visible the traces of the Anthropocene. This describes the melting pot of interests, concerns or worries expressed by the protagonists, especially emerging ones, of contemporary artistic creation. In that context, the present research delves into the study of the photographic series entitled "El Vigilante" (2014-2019), made by visual and multimedia artist Aissa Santiso (Havana 1992-), and her contribution to contemporary artistic creation within the framework of the digital era and the social impact of Web 2.0. A project that has as its setting the cities of the 21st century, as the main protagonist, the threat of the surveillance state in everyday life through the technology of CCTV cameras, among others, and as a backdrop the liquid condition of contemporary society theorized by Zygmunt Bauman.
