Abstract
Esta tesis doctoral analiza los mecanismos y las consecuencias de la instrumentalización política del arte y la cultura españolas durante el franquismo. This doctoral thesis analyses the mechanisms and consequences of the political and instrumental use of Spanish art and culture during Franco's regime. To do so, it uses the image and production of Pablo Picasso as an object of study. The artist's visibility in the Spanish Republican exile (outside) and in the Francoist context (inside) exemplifies this appropriation and favours a comparative study. The argument is based on the observation that Picasso was used in opposing historical discourses, which endowed the artist with multiple meanings that served different purposes. Moreover, the artist demonstrated a specific political tendency, the roots of which precede the Spanish Civil War. While the political cultures of the exile strengthened Picasso's militancy, the Francoist officialdom struggled to neutralise it. This resulted in the emergence of opposing subjectivities that nevertheless coexisted in the same historical period...
