Abstract
This paper seeks to make a conceptual proposal on forgiveness, cultures of forgiveness, and the aesthetics of forgiveness. It is based on two main hypotheses: that current culture is ambivalent regarding the validity of revenge, which socially predisposes to violence, and that art, and literature in particular, can have a cultural impact, even if modestly, in promoting cultures of forgiveness. To develop these two hypotheses, we begin by analyzing two Colombian works whose leitmotif is revenge, but which nevertheless produce aesthetic effects of forgiveness. These are the film Matar a Jesús (2018), directed by Laura Mora and written by her and Alonso Torres, and the short story La venganza (1963), by Manuel Mejía Vallejo. This entails the articulation between an ethical problem (forgiveness as an individual and social attitude that favors peaceful coexistence) and an aesthetic one (how it is produced as an aesthetic effect and what are the implications of its literary and cinematic approach)...
