Abstract
This paper aims to address silence in its relationship with Art Therapy from the viewpoint of experts in the field in the Spanish professional context, as well as from the experience of the researcher herself, an art therapist in training. For this purpose, first, a review of articles and materials that explore theories referring to both concepts, as well as other studies that examine this relationship, is carried out. The bibliographic review undertaken highlights the need for further study of the relationship between silence and art therapy and the updating of research for the improvement of professional practice. Secondly, this study proposes a qualitative research which, thanks to techniques and tools proper of this paradigm together with those of the Arts-Based Research, intends to enhance the understanding of the phenomenon and the contribution to the construction of knowledge on the discipline. Results obtained from the analysis of data are contrasted with the existing theories. One of the main findings reveals that the development of the ability to manage silence in art therapy sessions is improved over time, thanks to the art therapist experience, supervision and personal processes, which emphasizes the appropriateness of the methodological design used in this research by rescuing the first-person voices of art therapists with a solid professional trajectory, incorporating art in the conversation, as well as throughout the entire process of this study.
