Traducción feminista: lenguaje inclusivo aplicado a relatos de «A Haunted House, and other short stories», de Virginia Woolf

Abstract

En el presente trabajo de investigación, abordaremos la rama de la traducción denominada «traducción feminista» para comprender sus orígenes, sus postulados, su relevancia y su pertinencia. Trataremos de dar respuesta a en qué consiste este tipo de traducción, por qué es importante tener en cuenta el género a la hora de traducir, por qué la lengua invisibiliza a las mujeres y el masculino genérico no es la opción ideal, qué formas hay de hacer una traducción feminista y qué opiniones hay respecto al uso del lenguaje inclusivo. A continuación, tras explicar lo que representa la figura de Virginia Woolf dentro del movimiento feminista y de contextualizar sus obras, procederemos a comparar tres traducciones diferentes de cuatro relatos seleccionados de la antología «A Haunted House, and other short stories». El objetivo de este estudio será descubrir cómo se tradujeron los elementos problemáticos desde el punto de vista del género para luego hacer una propuesta de traducción feminista e inclusiva. Antes de proceder a las conclusiones, haremos un breve resumen de las tendencias y patrones detectados en cada una de las traducciones analizadas y elaboraremos un compendio de estrategias de traducción que pueda servir de orientación de cara a hacer futuras traducciones. El fin de todo ello será, por una parte, concienciar sobre la importancia de la traducción feminista y, por otra parte, demostrar que es posible traducir literatura con perspectiva de género mediante el uso de lenguaje inclusivo.

In the present research project, we shall approach the branch of translation denominated as «feminist translation» in order to comprehend its origins, postulates, relevance and pertinence. We will try to determine what this type of translation consists of, why it is important to take into account gender when translating, why language makes women invisible and the generic masculine is not the ideal option, what forms there are of making a feminist translation, and the existing opinions regarding the use of inclusive language. Next, after explaining what the figure of Virginia Woolf represents within the feminist movement and after contextualizing her works, we shall compare three different translations of four stories selected from the anthology «A Haunted House, and other short stories». The purpose of this study will be to discover how problematic elements, from the point of view of gender, were translated in order to propose a translation that is feminist and inclusive. Before proceeding to the conclusion, we will briefly summarise the tendencies and patterns found in each of the analysed translations and elaborate a compendium of strategies that might serve as a guide in the face of future translations. The aim of this will be, on the one hand, to raise awareness concerning the importance of feminist translation and, on the other hand, to demonstrate that it is possible to translate literature with a gender perspective through the employment of inclusive language.
