Abstract
In this thesis my purpose is to bring the richness of gender studies to the analysis of contemporary secularization and its social dynamics in Madrid, between 1936 and 1939, through the study of identities and anticlerical violence. This research focuses on showing its heterogeneous nature both in its nature and in its practices of opposition and protest, revealing the relevance of its collective experience. Realities that had special significance in the construction of sexual and national identities before the outbreak of the Civil War in July 1936. In addition, this study focuses directly on the agents of anticlerical violence, exploring the connections between the anticlerical torrent of Julio de 1936 and the phenomenon of feminization of religion. A phenomenon assumed by the ecclesiastical account that replaced the one of the misogyny and the one of inferiority feminine. The Catholic feeling conformed a certain conception of woman, like angel of the home, avoiding to alter the traditional structures in front of the modernity. The insistence on this phenomenon in this doctoral thesis is due to two fundamental reasons. First, the importance of the relations between national culture and religion, which renew studies on Catholicism and political and social culture. Second, we explore the development of social and political re-Christianization as a militant and defensive movement, against anticlericalism and secularization.
