Abstract
The article addresses the dynamics of a territory with a strong wine growing tradition as in Ain Temouchent wilaya (Algeria) by identifying the problems faced by producers with the opening of the Algerian economy to global markets and by analysing the way in which these problems can be solved by taking the resources of the territory into account and by incorporating new coordination mechanisms between stakeholders. The research described is aimed at approaching the concretisation of an 'alternative' for establishing sustainable development strategies by applying the perspective of local agrifood systems. It is aimed in particular at demonstrating the usefulness of the concept as the basis for a new pathway to face the opening of markets and to contribute to the rural development process by linking rural agro-industry, territory and collective action. This approach is used to analyse whether wine growing and production at Ain Temouchent possess the features required to be defined as a local agrifood system. This is followed by the identification of the critical fields to be addressed in order to promote its development.
