Abstract
The current situation of the Russian media reveals a complex political framework in which political, military and economical interests appear as interrelated. This particular scenario is the result of the evolution experienced by the media in a country which has gone through many dramatic transformations. Bearing in mind this evolution, this article will examine the various functions attributed to the media by political elites and sections of power throughout different historical periods, comprising from the Zarist Russia to that of Yeltsin and Putin, also including the soviet period. The article will also look at how appropriate the term neo authoritarianism is to define the role of today’s media in the country
