Abstract
This doctoral thesis, Jerry Lewis. The Day the Comedian Filmed, studies the filmography of the American namesake actor as a cinematographic author, one of the most important figures in world comedy cinema, and particularly in American comedy throughout the Twentieth century. The career of Jerry Lewis is analyzed from the point of view of the three most important ages: His first times like Dean Martińs pardner, his next period acting in the Frank Tashlińs movies and, finally, his period as a total filmmaker, directing his personals and own pictures in the sixties. In our analysis we mark his more representative emotion pictures and also we indicate his most important technical, artistic and stylistic characteristics which form his authorial condition such as filmmaker, such as the creative use of sound, color photography and visual space, as well as an extraordinary mechanics of the comic gag. We analyze with special attention his not released movie, The Day the Clown Cried (1972), which we considerate one of the most transcendental pictures directed by Jerry Lewis, even this movie, actually, still isńt released in theatres. We will analyze the most relevant thematic and formal elements of this work, and for this we will have privileged testimonies such as the French critic Jean-Michel Frodon, who has been able to watch a copy of the film, and who has been interviewed for this thesis. We consider The Day the Clown Cried as a fundamental film that marks a before and after irrefutable in its trajectory. In fact, his work as an author is determined by two feature films that condition all his filmography: on the one hand The Nutty Professor in 1963, and on the other, The Day the Clown Cried in 1972. We will defend the criterion that this still unpublished film forms part Essential of the lewisian work together with The Nutty Professor. Definitively, we want to do a complete study about Jerry Lewis, in the first investigation in this way into a Spanish university, about Jerry Lewis, one of the greatest genius in the comedian history and in the cinema history.
