Abstract
Entre el 26 de enero y el 14 de febrero de 1939 cruzaron a Francia alrededor de 500.000 españoles, esta sería la penúltima de las cinco grandes oleadas que tuvieron lugar como consecuencia directa del alzamiento militar en España. Sin embargo, desde el año 1936 las diferentes decisiones políticas y administrativas francesas fueron determinando el desarrollo y la evolución del estatus jurídico de los primeros exiliados españoles en territorio francés, ya que estos fueron tratados, antes que nada, como extranjeros. Al aceptar esta categorización es posible, a su vez, comprender el devenir de los españoles. De hecho, la desprotección jurídica (debido a la inexistencia de un estatus de refugiado que amparase a los españoles) junto con el inicio de la Segunda Guerra Mundial cambiaron, definitivamente, el reconocimiento francés hacia los exiliados españoles..
Between January 26th and February 14th, 1939, around 500,000 Spaniards fled to France, the penultimate of five major waves that were driven by the military uprising in Spain. Nonetheless, from 1936 onwards, different political and administrative decisions in France determined the development and evolution of the legal status of the first Spanish exiles in French territory, as they were treated primarily as foreigners. By accepting this categorisation, one is able to understand the situation of these Spanish nationals. In fact, the lack of legal protection (due to the absence of a refugee status that could protect them) along with the outbreak of World War II definitively changed French recognition of Spanish exiles...
