Abstract
ABSTRACT: In this paper we examine a passage from "De divinatione" in which Cicero strongly criticises the "Sibylline Books" and their custodians, consider the «collegium» of the «quindecemviri sacris faciundis», and compare it with various epistolary and oratorical texts on the well‐known political scandal caused by the restoration of Ptolemy Auletes on the throne of Egypt. It is clear to see the contradictory image conveyed by this author of one of the most important institutions of Rome’s official religion, an institution also marked by its frequent involvement in counterfeiting for political purposes.
