Abstract
The Ethicorum Ovidianorum libri IV (1617) by the jesuit Jacobus Pontanus offer a collection of sententiae, proverbs and exempla taken from the works of Ovid. The mythological material present in the works of Ovid is selected, organized and reformulated to avoid the morally objectionable content. The book is a tool for edification and for learning the Latin language. An author, Ovid, and a subject, mythology, both theoretically dangerous, thus become useful medicine for students of the Company.
