Abstract
The central issue of this thesis is the comparative study of the similarity and difference between null subjects in Spanish and Mandarin Chinese in the study of discourse anaphora. Specifically, it focuses on the use and interpretation of third person referential null subjects, keeping in mind that the morphological difference between both languages. The theoretical framework of this study is based on the cognition-centered pragmatic theories, such as the Relevance Theory by Sperber and Wilson, the Givenness Hierarchy by Gundel, Hedberg and Zacharski, and the Accessibility Theory by Ariel; moreover, it is also inspired by the recent research on discourse anaphora in Spanish and Chinese. This thesis is developed in two distinct aspects: in the first one, a contrastive analysis of null subjects in both languages based on the previously established theoretical frameworks; in the second aspect, an empirical study which allows to verify and complement the conclusions reached in the theoretical-contrastive part, based on the obtained data results. Thus, a broad vision of the main issue is finally reached...
