Hasta casi finales del siglo XX, la educación universitaria se caracterizaba por un modelo predominantemente centrado en el profesor, donde la instrucción magistral unidireccional era la norma. Sin embargo, este enfoque tradicional se encontró con una creciente oposición por parte de los defensores del modelo centrado en el estudiante, que aboga por una participación más activa del estudiante y un papel de facilitador por parte del docente.
