Abstract
ABSTRACT: The image of the Moor has become an object of central power through which the other is dominated. The stereotype of the Moor emerged during the Middle Ages, and has since been maintained and reinterpreted according to the political context of the time. Given that it originated in the Middle Ages and is still maintained to this day, the Moor stereotype has lasted a minimum of ten centuries. Some of the key events regarding the subject matter are the establishment of Al-Andalus, the Christian political centralization and religious homogenization, the expulsion of Jews and Moors, the orientation towards Africa during the 19th century, the colonial period and the effects of post-colonial migrations. Ever since its emergence to the present day, a negative and maurophobic image of the Moor has predominated, but on some occasions the Moor has been depicted with a rather maurophilic image, that is to say, with not so negative or even positive stereotypes. These images will alternate according to the political interests of each era. Although there has always been an Islamic religious component in the stereotype of the Moor, it has recently been given more importance, which is why Islam plays an important role in this stereotype.
