Abstract
Pyogenic hepatic abscesses (PHA) were described by Hippocrates in 400 BC but remain an unusual diagnosis. DeBackey and Oschner described the etiology, treatment and mortality of PHA in 1938, accepting drainage and other more aggressive treatments as definitive therapy, with a mortality rate of 60-80% in the general population. Nowadays, with more accurate diagnostic techniques, enhanced treatments and improvements in intensive care, mortality has been reduced to 5-30% depending on the series. Without treatment, the disorder is nearly always fatal. The incidence of PHA in the general population varies between 1.1 and 2.3 cases per 100,000 inhabitants per year in Europe, being higher in Asian countries, with approximately 12-18 patients per 100,000 inhabitants per year. Among the liver transplanted population, the incidence varies from 0.5%-2.9% with mortality as high as 45%...
