Abstract
The successful outcome of China's economic reform in 1978-95 contrasts sharply with the transitional experience of the Eastern European countries. This paper tries to suggest that China's success is due certainly to advantageous structural factors (such as good initial conditions and a privileged geographical location), but also to an adecuate gradualism in the policy of reforms.
