Aprender del pasado y aventurar el futuro: el patrimonio universitario europeo en la encrucijada

Abstract

La universidad y los museos nacen en Europa, su historia y patrimonio se entrelazan de forma natural y dinámica en este contexto europeo y desde allí se expanden a todo el mundo. Intentaremos conocer su realidad y la evolución de los distintos patrimonios, entender su actualidad y descifrar los retos a los que se enfrentan estas instituciones universales. El patrimonio de las universidades reúne los vestigios de la actividad humana relacionada con la enseñanza superior, es una fuente de riqueza considerable para la comunidad académica (estudiantes, docentes y personal administrativo) porque representa sus creencias, valores, logros y su función social y cultural, así como los modos de transmisión del conocimiento y la capacidad de innovación. El patrimonio universitario puede crear un vínculo estrecho con las comunidades locales y contribuir a la misión social o la llamada tercera misión de las universidades. Las crisis y desafíos por los que han pasado las universidades, sus museos y colecciones desde su creación nos hablan de su capacidad de adaptación, evolución y supervivencia en tiempos difíciles y su mirada al futuro con nuevas iniciativas de investigación, catalogación, conservación y difusión.The university and museums originated in Europe; their history and heritage are naturally and dynamically intertwined within this European context and from there, they expanded to the rest of the world. We will attempt to understand their reality and the evolution of various heritages, comprehend their current state, and decipher the challenges faced by these universal institutions. The heritage of universities encompasses the remnants of human activity related to higher education, is a considerable source of wealth for the academic community (students, faculty, and administrative staff). It represents their beliefs, values, achievements, and social and cultural roles, as well as the modes of knowledge transmission and capacity for innovation. University Heritage can create a close bond with local communities and contribute to the social mission or the socalled ‘third mission’ of universities. The crises and challenges that universities, their museums, and collections have faced since their inception speak to their ability to adapt, evolve, and survive in difficult times, while also looking toward the future with new initiatives in research, cataloguing, conservation, and dissemination. All of this entails a deep review of their nature and uniqueness, fostering the emergence of proposals that prompt us to think and act imaginatively. For the aforementioned to be effective, it is necessary to work collaboratively through networks, associations, and alliances not only locally and nationally but, above all, internationally, which support the social value of this heritage.
