Abstract
The 19th-century Universal Exhibitions were, among other things, privileged showcases for innovation and industrial progress, where countries competed to showcase their economic power and the diversity and quality of their productions. Likewise, based on the recognition of the growing interrelation and complementarity of the different territories, these events sought to create a sense of community through international ex-changes, understood as a generalized source of prosperity. This paper focuses precisely on the Universal Exhibitions as forums that invited free trade: it analyzes the free-trade or protectionist positions on the promotion of national production that were reflected in the reports of the Spanish economists who visited them.
