Abstract
En el contexto del proyecto TRANSFER (Tsunami risk and strategies for the
The Gulf of Cádiz is one of the European areas where the tsunami risk is higher. In this area great tsunamis have been generated in the past and its tectonic characteristics points to a high potencial of generation in the future. In the context of the TRANSFER project (Tsunami risk and strategies for the European region, http://www.transferproject.eu/) we have compiled tsunamigenic sources in the area with the main goal of characterize them for its use in studies of tsunami risk and hazard. We have divided the area in tsunamigenic zones. For each zone we have characterized the maximum credible earthquake from the study of the fault dimensions and characteristics. In all the zones we found faults capable of generate earthquakes with magnitudes Mw > 8.0, being the zone of the Horseshoe Abyssal Plain probably the more dangerous.
