Abstract
This paper examines the specific case of the "Centennial Bond" (AC17), issued in 2017 by the Argentinean government. The analysis explores the government's motivation for issuing the bond and its subsequent restructuring in 2020 amid restrictive economic conditions. The study spans a review of Argentina's recent economic history, tracing the evolution of its credit risk and including various economic-financial indicators in the analysis. At issuance, the bond offered a competitive rate of return; however, factors such as currency depreciation, inflation, and limited reserves negatively impacted its value. Through historical data and financial calculations, the study assesses the impact of economic changes and market expectations on the bond's performance, showing that domestic factors significantly influence its performance, sometimes more so than international factors. The research concludes that the country’s strategy of extending debt maturities and adjusting payments aims to improve financial stability, although it harmed significantly the bond holder and remains vulnerable to global interest rate fluctuations and internal crises.
