Pedro el Cruel, compendio de la Posmodernidad, y una aproximación a la obra de Agustín García Calvo

Abstract

RESUMEN: Durante siglos, la figura ambigua del rey don Pedro ha servido para definir la tiranía, la justicia, la seducción amorosa y la locura de una época. Este artículo se centra, concretamente, en lo que ha supuesto ese imaginario colectivo para la contemporaneidad, partiendo del estudio de la obra «Baraja del rey don Pedro», de Agustín García Calvo, ganadora del Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática en 1999. Interesa en particular analizar cómo esta pieza de teatro ayuda a entender tres conceptos importantes para la estética posmodernista y para el medievalismo contemporáneo: el rechazo del archivo «último» y «verdadero», la atracción libidinosa de lo grotesco y las estrategias intensivas del lenguaje planteadas en la teatralidad contemporánea.

ABSTRACT: For centuries, the ambiguous figure of Peter of Castile, known as the Cruel, has served to define the tyranny, justice, amorous seduction and madness of an era. This paper focuses specifically on what this collective imaginary has meant for the contemporary world, by analysing the play «Baraja del rey don Pedro», by Agustín García Calvo, winner of the «Premio Nacional de Literatura Dramática» in 1999. It is of particular interest to examine and explain how this play helps to raise three important concepts for postmodernist aesthetics and for contemporary Medievalism: the rejection of the «ultimate» and «true» archive, the libidinal attraction of the grotesque and the intensive strategies of language put forward in contemporary theatricality.
