Abstract
The Campodola Viewpoint represents the first such structure in Galicia specifically built for the observation of ageological feature. The latter consists on a large recumbent fold (O Courel Syncline) formed during the first phase of the Variscan Orogeny and preserved practically intactsince the lower Carboniferous, more than 320 milion years ago. This lookout point provides an astounding panoramic view over the parabolic hinge displayed by the Ordovician Armorican Quartzite, as well as over the flattened subhorizontal flanks of the main fold, whose axial length exceedes 10 km. The O Courel Syncline was proposed as a Geosite of International Relevance already in 1983, and the Campodola Viewpoint will aid the cultural and educational understanding of this geological monument, probably the most important in Galicia of an stratigraphical-structural origin.
