Abstract
This study presents a critical analysis and an annotated edition of Libro de las Recreaciones by María de San José, a text that stands out within the Carmelite literary tradition of the Spanish Golden Age for its dialogical structure, spiritual depth, and autobiographical dimension. As a disciple and intellectual heir of Saint Teresa of Jesus, María de San José constructs a discourse that intertwines theological reflection, meditation on religious life, and a representation of female experience within an ecclesiastical framework that imposed significant restrictions on women. The aim of this research is not only to establish a critical edition of the text, accompanied by explanatory notes that contextualize it historically and culturally, but also to offer a multidisciplinary study that examines the generic hybridity of the work, the construction of María de San José’s authorial voice, and a philological analysis that highlights the tensions between literary tradition and innovation. Furthermore, this thesis contributes to a deeper understanding of the role of religious women writers in early modern Spain, underscoring the significance of María de San José within both the Carmelite traditionand the broader landscape of conventual literature...
